Carl Scarborough Career
Early in his racing career, Scarborough missed two years due to injuries suffered as a passenger in a car crash. In 1946, Scarborough was the national champion in midget car racing. In the same year, he also won the national large car championship, making him the first driver to be named Central States Racing Association national champion in both categories.
He ran the second-fastest qualifying lap ever recorded at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway while attempting to qualify for the 1951 Indianapolis 500. In that race, he finished 18th; within four years, eleven of the 35 men who started the 1951 race had died, primarily due to racing-related incidents.
