Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Biography: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira was born on born 2 June 1976 in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, Brazil. His brother is a former PRIDE Heavyweight Champion and interim UFC Heavyweight Champion. According to Nogueira, it is unusual for Brazilian twins to share the same first name, and the twins were named after their father, Antônio Amielto.
Despite being identical twins, Nogueira may be identified by his brother by his smaller weight, shorter height, and the appearance of a scar on his brother’s lower back. The twins began their training with the Brazilian Top Team, then Black House, and eventually with Team Nogueira, where they also teach.

Nogueira made his PRIDE Fighting Championships debut on April 28, 2002, at PRIDE 20 against Japanese pro wrestler/mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Yusuke Imamura, and he was very successful, finishing the fight with a guillotine choke in 35 seconds. Nogueira’s next bout would end in a decision defeat to Vladimir Matyushenko, but he recovered with a victory over Tsuyoshi Kohsaka.
Nogueira would fight Guy Mezger again for PRIDE at PRIDE 24. As they both appeared slightly unsure in the stand-up, neither man pushed the action significantly. The fight would be decided by a majority decision in favor of Nogueira, as determined by the judges’ scorecards. Nogueira fought Kazuhiro Nakamura, who was making his professional MMA debut, at PRIDE 25. Nakamura fought bravely and even escaped numerous submission attempts, but in the end, Nogueira’s experience and skill won, and he defeated Nakamura with an armbar in the second round.
In his next fight with PRIDE, Nogueira would face legendary fighter and audience favorite Kazushi Sakuraba in the main event of PRIDE Shockwave 2003, a significant move up in competition. The fight would be an excellent back-and-forth contest in which Nogueira would utilize his superior ground game and defeat Sakuraba in the clinch. Towards the end of the third, he would even bleed Sakuraba out with strikes. Dana White confirmed on August 28, 2009, that Nogueira had signed a contract with the UFC. Nogueira made his debut at UFC 106 against Luiz Cané. At 1:56 of the first round, Nogueira defeated the Brazilian with a rising left hook before finishing him off with hits on the mat. At UFC 109, Nogueira was scheduled to face Brandon Vera. However, Nogueira had to pull out due to a training-related ankle fracture.
His next bout was scheduled at UFC 114 against former UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion Forrest Griffin; however, Griffin withdrew due to a shoulder injury. Instead, Nogueira faced Jason Brilz on short notice. Nogueira was declared winner in a controversial split decision in which Brilz appeared to control the fight for the duration.
Nogueira was scheduled to face Trevor Smith at UFC on ESPN+ 22 on November 16, 2019. Due to an injury, Nogueira had to withdraw from the event, resulting in the fight’s cancellation.
