Bajrang Punia Biography: Bajrang Punia, born on 26th February 1994, is an Indian Wrestler who represents India in the 65 kg weight category in international. He has won gold in 2017, 2018, 2019 Asian Games, 2018 Wrestling Championship, 2018 Commonwealth Games. Bajrang Punia Biography: Early Life

Bajrang was born on 26 February in Khudan village of Jhajjar district in Haryana, India, to Balvan Singh Puniya (father) and Om Pyari Punia (mother). His father recommended pursuing desi sports like kabaddi, wrestling instead of money lending traditional sports. He started wrestling at the age of 7, getting inspired by his father and siblings. Bajrang was told to focus on wrestling by his father, who was a former desi wrestler.

His father, Balvan Singh Punia, sent him to the mud wrestling school. Bajrang soon got attached to the sport and used to bunk school and practice at the ground. His skills and strength were noticeable because his family shifted to Sonepat, where he could pursue professional wrestling training. In Sonepat, he joined the Sports Authority of India center (SAI).

  • Bajrang started wrestling at the age of 7 in the mud wrestling school of his village. Later in 2015, he shifted to Sonepat to join the local Sports Authority of India center (SAI).
  • In the 2013 Asian Wrestling Championship in New Delhi, he won a bronze medal in the 60kg men’s freestyle category losing 3-1 in the semi-finals to North Korean wrestler Hwang Ryong-hak.
  • Later the same year, he won a bronze medal in the 60kg men’s freestyle category at the 2013 World Wrestling Championship losing by 2-9 to EnkhsaikhanyNyam-Ochir of Mongolia.
  • He was fortunate in winning a silver medal after losing 1-3 to Masoud Esmaeilpoorjouybari of Iran in the 2014 Asian Games. In the same year, he won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.
  • In the 2014 World Wrestling Championship, he was kicked out of the tournament at the 5th position without winning any medal.
  • He had an excellent performance with a gold medal at the 2017 Asian Wrestling championship.
  • His wrestling career was at its highest peak in 2018, where he won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and Asain Games with a silver in World Wrestling Championship in the freestyle 65kg men’s category.
  • In 2019, he won a bronze at the 2019 World Wrestling championship.
  • He competed at the 65kg event in the Matteo Pallicone Ranking Series 2021 and won a gold medal.
  • He was bought for 29.5 lakhs by Banglore Yoddha and 30 lakhs by Punjab Royals in the Pro Wrestling League.
  • Bajrang Punia won the gold medal in the 65kg final against Lachlan McNeil of Canada at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
