Chael Sonnen Biography: Chael Patrick Sonnen was born in Oregon on April 3, 1977. He was raised in a Catholic family with German ancestors. Sonnen started interested in wrestling from an early age. He began training intensively at the age of nine. Chael finished second in the state championships throughout his high school years. Sonnen began studying boxing in the 1990s, wanting to pursue a career in Mixed Martial Arts. Chael had his sights set on the UFC after he graduated.
Sonnen began his college career at Brigham Young University but shifted to the University of Oregon in Eugene after the former school announced the end of its wrestling division. Sonnen proved his abilities once more while at the University of Oregon by excelling on the wrestling squad. He graduated from the university in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology.

Chael Sonnen Career
Sonnen began his mixed martial arts career in 1997, at the age of 19, in Vancouver, Washington, by defeating Ben Hailey. Next, he defeated Strikeforce Middleweight contender and future ICON Sport Middleweight Champion Jason “Mayhem” Miller. Before losing to Trevor Prangley, he won his first six bouts. In late 2003, he was submitted with a triangle hold by future Ultimate Fighter winner and UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Forrest Griffin.
Sonnen made his UFC debut against former IFC Light Heavyweight Champion Renato Sobral at UFC 55, submitting to a triangle choke in the second round. He avenged his first loss by fighting Trevor Prangley unanimously at UFC Ultimate Fight Night 4. He fought Jeremy Horn for the third time at UFC 60 and submitted via armbar. Following this, he was released from the UFC.
Sonnen returned to the UFC following the dissolution of the middleweight division in the WEC. At UFC 95, in his first fight for the promotion since UFC 60, he was submitted via triangle choke by jiu-jitsu specialist Demian Maia.
Sonnen defeated Dan Miller via unanimous decision at UFC 98 in May 2009. He replaced Yushin Okami, who injured a ligament during training. He agreed the fight on short notice and lost 36 pounds (16 kilograms) to compete. In his next bout, at UFC 104, Sonnen defeated Okami unanimously through superior wrestling.
Sonnen was scheduled to face Nate Marquardt at UFC 110, but the fight was rescheduled to February 6’s UFC 109. Sonnen got a unanimous decision victory after surviving two deep guillotine chokes in the first and third rounds. With the win, Sonnen became a top contender for the UFC Middleweight Championship.
Chael Sonnen Controversy
Sonnen was charged with five counts of misdemeanor assault in December 2021 following an alleged altercation at the Luxor Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Witnesses allegedly noticed Sonnen pounding loudly on a hotel room door at approximately 7:00 PM PST. When the door opened, Sonnen reportedly got into a physical altercation with multiple individuals, prompting hotel residents to call 911.
Sonnen was not arrested, only detained, and subsequently issued citations for the offenses. Sonnen was captured on video being led down a hotel hallway by Las Vegas police officers while in handcuffs. The charges against Sonnen were dismissed without prejudice on January 27, 2022.
On March 22, 2022, however, Sonnen was charged with one felony battery by strangulation charge and ten misdemeanor battery charges, including the alleged choking of one person and the possible striking of a female, among others. Sonnen was initially charged with five counts of misdemeanor battery, but the allegations were withdrawn in court. Sonnen’s charges were reduced to six misdemeanors on March 30, 2022, and the trial is scheduled to commence on April 5, 2023, after Sonnen rejected a plea agreement on four misdemeanor battery charges.
