When he was a teenager, he began learning Kung Fu and Karate. Maia was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by his cousin when he was nineteen years old.
Demian achieved his black belt after four years and seven months of training. Demian Maia completed his education and got a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He is a fifth-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has won multiple significant events while competing for Team Brasa. He married Renata, who works for a Brazilian magazine. He is listed UFC Hall of Farmer Royce Gracie as his inspiration to start an MMA career but lists Royce’s brother Rickson Gracie as his primary hero. He speaks Portuguese, Spanish, and English. He has an academy in Sao Paulo which he opened in 2020 which includes a jiu-jitsu museum. He also started working as a member of the commentary team for the UFC Fight Pass Brazil in 2023.

Demian Maia MMA Career
On September 21, 2001, they fought at Tormenta en el Ring in Caracas, Venezuela. Maia won his MMA debut by TKO in just 48 seconds against Sosa. He returned after a four-year absence to submit Lukasz Chewlicki with an armbar at The Cage Vol. 4 – Redemption. Maia then competed at Super Challenge 1, winning three victories in one night to become the under-83 kg Super Challenge Champion for 2007. In 2007, he competed against Ryan Stout in GFC – Evolution. Stout’s shoulder fractured after Maia turned him into mount early in the first round, resulting in a stoppage due to injury.

On August 7, 2007, it was reported that Maia had signed a contract with the UFC. Initially, he was scheduled to face veteran Marvin Eastman, but Eastman dropped out due to eye surgery. His replacement is Ryan Jensen, a Team Quest trainee. The preliminary fight occurred at UFC 77 in Cincinnati, Ohio, on October 20. Maia won the first round by rear naked choke and received the Submission of the Night award, which earned him an additional $40,000.
On April 19, 2008, Maia fought Ed Herman, a Team Quest fighter and TUF 3 finalist, at UFC 83 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. At 2:27 of the second round, Maia lost Herman through technical Submission due to a mounted triangle hold. The victory, which earned him $75,000, received him Submission of the Night honors for the second time.
Chael Sonnen, a WEC star and future contender for the UFC middleweight title, would face Maia at UFC 95 in London, England, on February 21, 2009. During the match, Maia used a lateral drop takedown to throw Sonnen over his head and to the ground, where she quickly took mount. Maia then transitioned to a triangle choke and defeated Sonnen at 2:24 of the first round.
On August 29 at UFC 102, Maia’s next opponent was former title contender Nate Marquardt. Maia was scheduled to face Sangwook Kim in the main event super fight of the Spyder BJJ ‘Road to Black’ final on February 12, 2023. Maia scored 16 points before submitting Kim with an arm-triangle submission during the match.
