Cruz was born in San Diego, California, and is descended from Mexicans. His adolescence was spent in a Tucson trailer park with his single mother, grandmother, and sibling. He began wrestling in seventh grade and competed for Flowing Wells High School throughout high school.

After suffering an injury during his senior year, he could not receive a wrestling scholarship at the University of Northern Colorado. Before becoming a full-time firefighter, Cruz worked as a customer service representative at Lowe’s and attended community college to study to become a firefighter.

Dominick Cruz Career

2005 marked the beginning of Cruz’s professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career, where he competed for the Rage in the Cage and Total Combat organizations. He had a 9–0 record before joining World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC).

His first Fight in the WEC was a featherweight title fight against Urijah Faber at WEC 26, which he lost by first-round guillotine choke. The battle was the commencement of a long-lasting rivalry between the two combatants.

On June 7, 2008, at WEC 34, he debuted in the 135-pound bantamweight division, defeating Charlie Valencia by unanimous decision. Cruz went on to win by decision against Ian McCall on January 25, 2009, at WEC 38, and Ivan Lopez on April 5, 2009, at WEC 40. Cruz defeated Joseph Benavidez unanimously on August 9, 2009, at WEC 42. Both competitors received Fight of the Night honors.

Cruz was offered a title opportunity against incumbent WEC Bantamweight Champion Brian Bowles after a four-fight win streak. The Fight took place on March 6, 2010, at WEC 47. Bowles could not continue after fracturing his hand in the second round, resulting in Cruz’s TKO victory. Cruz won the WEC Bantamweight Championship.

Cruz defended his title for the first time against Joseph Benavidez at WEC 50 on August 18, 2010. Cruz’s left hand was broken during the battle. It was a rematch of their Fight at WEC 42, in which Cruz dealt Benavidez his first career defeat via unanimous decision. Cruz once again defeated Benavidez via a split decision, retaining his title.

On December 14, 2010, at WEC 53, Cruz fought Scott Jorgensen for both the WEC Bantamweight Championship and the newly created UFC Bantamweight Championship.

This would be the last Bantamweight Championship fight under the WEC banner and crown the first UFC Bantamweight champion, making it the only UFC title fight outside the UFC. Cruz retained the WEC Bantamweight Championship with a unanimous decision victory over Jorgensen and became the inaugural UFC Bantamweight Champion.

Cruz fought Casey Kenney at UFC 259 on March 6, 2021. He won the Fight by split decision.

Cruz fought Pedro Munhoz at UFC 269 on December 11, 2021. Despite being knocked down twice in the first round, he won the Fight unanimously. The Fight was awarded the Fight of the Night bonus.

Cruz challenged Marlon Vera at UFC on ESPN 41 on August 13, 2022. He was knocked out in the fourth round by a head kick.
