Don Frye Career

In 1995, Don Frye joined Dan Severn’s entourage to Denver, assisting Severn in preparing for the Ultimate Ultimate. The following year, he moved to the burgeoning discipline of mixed martial arts and joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Frye, who made his UFC debut on February 16, 1996, at UFC 8 in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, was one of eight competitors in the open weight tournament that evening and one of two fighters of the era proficient in both stand-up and ground fights, the other being Marco Ruas.

In the quarterfinals, his strikes brought down 410-pound Thomas Ramirez in just eight seconds, setting a record that Duane Ludwig and Jorge Masvidal have since surpassed. In the semifinals, he took Sam Adkins down and arrived hammer fists to the face for a technical knockout. In the final, he met Gary Goodridge.

He forced the Trinidadian to submit by gaining a dominant position at the 2:14 mark, though not before landing multiple uppercuts standing and punches on the ground. This would be the first of three disputes between the two teams. Following the event, due to the controversy surrounding MMA at the time, Frye was barred from his previous occupation as a firefighter in Sierra Vista, Arizona, and from training in the Buena High School facility he had used since his ASU days.

After signing a multi-fight contract with the Pride Fighting Championships, Don Frye returned to mixed martial arts in 2001. He was a well-known figure in Japan due to his professional wrestling career. Two weeks after the September 11 attacks, Frye fought in an MMA fight for the first time in five years at Pride 16 in Osaka, Japan, on September 24, 2001.

He entered the ring waving an American flag and wearing a T-shirt that read, “Terrorists suck.” Having added 7 kilograms (15 lb) since his last MMA bout, he was incredibly muscular and appeared stronger than during his UFC days. However, his fight with Gilbert Yvel that night was controversial. It resulted in a first-round disqualification victory for Frye, as Yvel repeatedly gouged Frye’s eyes and was eventually disqualified for constantly gripping the ropes to avoid being taken down.
