Esteban Ocon Biography: Esteban Ocon was born in the Normandy town of Évreux to Sabrine Khelfane & Laurent Ocon, a mechanic who owns an Évreux garage. His paternal family comes from Málaga. His parents had to sell their family home, which also included his father’s garage, to fund his karting career. After selling the house, they resided and traveled to races in a caravan Ocon, also used as a motor home. Ocon currently resides in Geneva, Switzerland, as of 2022. Ocon began his karting career in 2006, finishing eighth in the Minime class of the French Championship. He claimed the Championship in 2007 and the Cadet class in 2008, defeating Anthoine Hubert and Pierre Gasly. He then raced in the KF3 category for three years, competing in the Spanish Championship and Italian Open Masters. He won the 2010 French KF3 championship and finished second in the 2011 WSK Euro Series behind Max Verstappen.
Ocon made his single-seater debut in 2012, competing in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 with Koiranen Motorsport. He finished fourteenth with four points, including a podium finish at his home round at Circuit Paul Ricard. He also competed in a limited season of Formula Renault 2.0 Alps with Koiranen, finishing sixth with two podiums at the Red Bull Ring.
He returned to the series in 2013 but switched to the ART Junior Team. He won two races, including one at Circuit Paul Ricard, and finished third in the championship behind Pierre Gasly and Oliver Rowland. A brief stint in the Northern European Cup resulted in a race win at the Hockenheimring and two other podium finishes.
Rio Haryanto was sacked from the backmarker Manor Racing team on August 10, 2016, when his sponsors failed to meet their contractual responsibilities. For the second half of the season, Ocon was picked as his successor, driving alongside Pascal Wehrlein. Ocon made his Formula One debut, finishing sixteenth in the Belgian Grand Prix. He finished eleventh in the rain-soaked Brazilian Grand Prix, dropping out of the points positions on the final lap. With this result, Ocon moved up to 23rd in the Drivers’ Championship, ahead of Haryanto.
Force India announced on November 10, 2016, that they had signed Ocon for the 2017 season as part of his multi-year contract with Mercedes, with Sergio Pérez as his new teammate. Ocon earned his first Formula One point on his debut for Force India in the Australian Grand Prix, and he went on to finish sixth at the Spanish Grand Prix.
On November 23, 2018, it was revealed that Ocon would join Mercedes as their reserve driver for 2019, following the confirmation that he would be replaced at Racing Point by team owner Lawrence Stroll’s son Lance, an outcome confirmed a week later. During the year, Ocon did not compete in a Grand Prix weekend. He claimed to have been in talks with Mercedes for the 2020 season, saying he was “very close” to replacing Valtteri Bottas. Mercedes eventually opted to stick with Bottas.
Ocon has a contract with Alpine until the end of the 2024 season. As Alonso left for Aston Martin, he received a new teammate in longtime karting opponent Pierre Gasly for 2023. Before the start of the season, he became “very sick” with a lung virus, which hampered his preparation.
It has been reported that before the French Grand Prix, it was officially announced that Ocon had signed a contract extension with Alpine running to the end of 2024. Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix 2024, Haas also announced that Ocon would surely join their team on a multi-year deal for the season of 2025 and beyond. He is all set to partner with British rookie Oliver Bearman.
