According to reports, FC Barcelona are all set to sign Dutch international Memphis Depay on a free transfer next week. Personal terms had already been agreed by the former Olympique Lyon striker who always wanted to join the catalan club. FC Barcelona only has to make it official now.
Sources say that the club doesn’t want to delay the signing further after what happened in the failed transfer of Georginio Wijnaldum. Ligue 1 club Paris Saint Germain hijacked the former Liverpool player in a surprising turn of events by offering the dutch international twice of what Barca were ready to pay.
Spanish daily Mundo deportivo confirmed the rumours regarding Memphis Depay.
Reports say Depay will join Barça next week
Reporter Gabriel Sans said, “Barça hopes to give officiality to the signing of Memphis Depay this coming week. In the presentation of Eric Garcia and Kun Agüero, President Joan Laporta announced more immediate reinforcements and after the brake on the incorporation of Wijnaldum, the hiring of the Lyon striker has become the headliner. The decision of the Barça club to ratify Koeman at the head of the squad has been decisive for Depay.”
“Club sources have reiterated the existence of a verbal agreement with the player with economic conditions subject to the context of restriction due to the pandemic and that are forcing Barça to tighten its belt. They talk about an expandable three-season contract, an extreme not yet confirmed. In the same way, the chip would be subject to variables and objectives for titles and matches played to compensate for the economic effort made to play at Camp Nou,” he further added.
Memphis Depay’s form this season
Memphis Depay had been in tremendous form this season. The 27 year old played 38 matches, scored 20 goals and provided 12 assists. In Fact the dutchman was one of the most prolific playmakers in all of Europe this season.
FC Barcelona have already signed Serigio Aguero on a free transfer this week. The addition of Memphis Depay in this squad will make Barca a top heavy club again. However, the cloud of confusion regarding the position in which Memphis Depay shall play in at Barca, still remains. Unlike Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay is not an out and out striker. His profile matches more with that of Depay, and we all know that with the presence of Lionel Messi in the team, it is almost impossible for any playmaker to flourish at FC Barcelona.
However, Memphis Depay can also strike well. Though not a proper no.9, Depay’s conversion rate is very good and he can score a good number of goals if he is given the opportunity.
Many argue that scoring 20 goals in Ligue 1 and scoring the same number of goals in La Liga is not the same thing, Barca fans, and most importantly head coach Ronald Koeman, who was so eager to bring him into the catalan club, are optimistic of a positive change in the team with the arrival of Memphis Depay.
