Fernando Alonso Biography: Fernando Alonso was born in 1981 to working-class parents, José and Ana in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain. Lorena, his older sister, is his only sibling. Alonso attended the Holy Guardian Angel Primary School and then the Institute Leopoldo Alas Clarn of San Lazaro as a child. He won his first kart race at the age of seven in Pola de Laviana. Alonso went on to win the Asturias and Galicia children’s junior championships in 1988 and 1989.
He won the Asturias and Basque County Cadet Championships in 1990. After joining the Spanish Karting Championship, Alonso later won four straight Junior National Championships from 1993 to 1996. Victories followed his early success in the Trofeo Estival, the Marlboro Masters, and the CIK-FIA 5 Continents Juniors Cup. Alonso won the Italian and Spanish International A championships in 1997. Alonso made his car racing debut at the age of 17 in the 1999 Nissan Euro Open, winning the title in the season’s last event. Alonso joined the Minardi race team in 2001 after serving as its test and reserve driver in 2000. The following year, he became Renault’s test driver, and in 2003 he was promoted to the race team. At the second race of the season, the Malaysian Grand Prix, Alonso overtook the record for the youngest pole position winner. He became the youngest Formula One race winner at the Hungarian Grand Prix later in the year. In 2003, Alonso collected four podium finishes and finished sixth in the World Drivers’ Championship. The following season began with a third-place finish at the Australian Grand Prix, and three more podium ends for the year.
Alonso’s most outstanding career achievement occurred in 2005 when he defeated Kimi Raikkonen to win the World Drivers’ Championship. He became the youngest driver to capture the championship with seven victories, six pole positions, and fourteen podium finishes. Alonso effectively defended his title in 2006, becoming the youngest two-time Formula One World Champion. He secured a three-year contract with McLaren in 2007.
