Premier League 2020-21 is scheduled to start in two weeks time from 14th August and with it, Fantasy Football enthusiasts are all charged up to start a brand new season of the most loved fantasy football game available online, i.e, Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

FPL is the official fantasy game of the Premier League in which players from all around the world set up imaginary teams by selecting players from the twenty participating clubs of that season and compete based on a detailed points system.

FPL officially started in the 2002-03 season with 76,000 players in the first edition. The popularity of the game only increased with time and as it now stands, there are over 8 Million active FPL players according to many reports and the community is increasing exponentially.

With less than two weeks left in the deadline of FPL 2021, here is a detailed guide about the game which will get you going and help you to headstart your campaign this season. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro at Fantasy Premier League, this guide will have something ‘extra’ to offer for everyone.

How to register your FPL team

Registering your Fantasy Premier League is simple. Go to Premier League’s official website and head on to the Fantasy Premier League section. Or you can simply go to their Fantasy Premier League page here

You can now ‘Sign up’ if you are a new user. It can be done using your email id, google account, facebook, twitter, or your apple account. If you have played it before though, you can simply ‘Log in’ and go ahead with the credentials that you saved last time.

Once you are finished adding your personal information (which they ask for in the next step) and you select your favourite club, you are all set and are directed straight away to the panel where you select your team.

Adding players to your FPL team

Each FPL manager is assigned £100M at the start of the season with which he must pick 2 Goalkeepers, 5 Defenders, 5 Midfielders and 3 Forwards (Total 15 players). By no means must the total cost of your team exceed £100M. However, once the season starts and the costs of the players start to fluctuate, your team’s value might increase or decrease depending on the market and your players’ performances.

If you do not know anything about Premier League and want the players to be added automatically, there is an ‘Auto Pick’ option that will randomly select 15 players from across the league. However, it is highly suggested that you select your own team manually by doing some basic research (this guide is the perfect starting point).

You can make unlimited transfers before the commencement of the first Gameweek and the Deadline is 18:30 (BST) on Friday, August 13 post which you will not be allowed to make any changes.

(Pro Tip: Complete your transfers half an-hour before every gameweek as the server tends to crash after that).

How to play Fantasy Premier League: Rules and Regulations

The aim of the game is to score as many points as you can by the end of the season. The overall winner is decided based on your total points at the end of the season and the ranking is made accordingly. Top 3 players across the world get exciting gifts from the Premier League and that should be your goal.

Now that you have selected your 15-men squad, it is time to pick your playing XI, just like a football match. Based on the fixtures, you have to choose the players whom you want to bench for a particular gameweek.

You can make your selections based on any formation but there must always be at least one goalkeeper, three goalkeepers and one forward in your playing XI.

Focus should be laid on arranging the order of substitutes as well as in case a p;ayer from your Playing XI does not play in a gameweek, a player from your bench will replace him. The preference order is from left to right on the bench (The leftmost player gets the highest preference).

You must also choose a captain and a vice captain from your playing XI. The captain’s points get doubled and in case your captain does not feature in a gameweek, your Vice Captain becomes your captain. The captain and Vice Captain can be changed in every gameweek.

Gameweek and Transfers in Fantasy Premier League

Transfers in FPL

Premier League matches are played according to gameweeks. It refers to a number of matches being played in a specific Gameweek. Usually there are 10 matches in a Gameweek and all the Premier League teams are involved in it.

In FPL, you get points per gameweek, according to the performance of your players. There is also a world ranking based on your Gameweek Score.

There are exceptions however, like in the case of Double Gameweeks in which some teams play 2 matches instead of one, giving an advantage to Fantasy geeks who have players belonging to those teams.

There will be a total of 38 Gameweeks in Premier League 2021-22.

Now coming on to transfers, you can make as many of them as you want before a gameweek. The first transfer is free but for every transfer after that, 4 points will be deducted from your total.

Saved transfer can be carried for at most 1 gameweek. Suppose if you don’t make a transfer in Gameweek 3, then you can make two free transfers in Gameweek 4. However, if you make only one transfer in Gameweek 4, you will only get 1 free transfer in Gameweek 5 and not 2.

Chips in Fantasy Premier League: The Trump Cards of FPL

Chips are the Trump cards of Fantasy Premier League. Each FPL player gets four chips ahead of their campaign which they can use at any point in the season to enhance their points.

The chips are: Bench Boost, Triple Captain, Free Hit and Wildcard

Bench Boost adds the points earned by the bench players to the total points of that gameweek.

Triple Captain triples the points scored by your captain instead of doubling it.

Using Free Hit, you can make as many free transfers as you want without getting any points deduction. The changes that you make in Free Hit are temporary, i.e, you will get your previous team back in the next gameweek.

Wildcard is similar to Free Hit. You can make as many free transfers as you want but the transfers will be permanent. You can use this chip twice in a season: First before 28th December, and the second one after that.

FPL Prizes: What do the Winners of Fantasy Premier League get?

Apart from the Global league which contains all the players from across the world, you can also join Public Leagues (Random leagues from around the world) and create Invitational leagues of your own. These are also called Mini-League. You can make min-leagues in both Classic and head-to-head format and invite your friends and family to join the league using league codes or league links so that you can compete against each other throughout the season. This adds to the excitement of FPL.
