He is the firstborn of three children and placed second at the NHSCA Senior Nationals before graduating high school. Edgar continued his wrestling career at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, where he qualified for the national tournament every four years.

Frankie Edgar Career
Edgar entered his first mixed martial arts contest with only a few weeks of training outside of grappling. Edgar initially trained with Rob Guarino of the Rhino Fight Team. Still, he is now a member of the Gracie system under Ricardo Almeida of the Gracie Barra team in Hamilton, New Jersey.
Edgar has been wrestling with Steve Rivera since the seventh grade at Elite Wrestling, NJ, in Jackson, New Jersey. Mark Henry from Millstone, New Jersey, serves as his boxing coach. Before attempting out for season five of The Ultimate Fighter, Edgar had a 5–0 record. Edgar auditioned in front of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White and matchmaker Joe Silva, but he was not chosen for the program.
A month later, however, Edgar was contacted by the UFC and asked if he would accept a bout with fellow undefeated fighter Tyson Griffin at UFC 67. Griffin had Edgar in a deep kneebar after the fight, but Edgar did not submit and won unanimously. UFC Unleashed has repeatedly rebroadcast the war.
Edgar defeated Mark Bocek via TKO in the first round at UFC 73. At UFC 78, he debuted his main card against Spencer Fisher and won unanimously. Gray Maynard handed Edgar his first defeat at UFC Fight Night 13. This was the initial match in a series. Maynard utilized his stature and wrestling expertise to defeat Edgar and earn a unanimous decision.
At UFC Fight Night 14, Edgar rebounded with another Fight of the Night victory against Hermes Franca. Edgar defeated former UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk by outworking him throughout all three rounds to secure a unanimous decision victory over the stronger and heavier opponent.
Edgar was scheduled to face Kurt Pellegrino at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale on December 5, 2009, but Pellegrino was forced to withdraw due to an injury. Matt Veach was selected to replace Pellegrino, moving up from an undercard bout.
After spending most of the first round on the defensive, Edgar became the aggressor in the second round by punishing Veach with strikes. After knocking Veach down with a straight right, Edgar took Veach’s back and submitted him with a rear naked choke at 2:22 of the second round.
