Amidst the Covid-19 outbreak, the nation is celebrating its 9th anniversary of the World Cup victory today. India defeated its neighbor Island, Sri Lanka, in the final on 2nd April 2011. Sri Lankan team chose to bat first after winning the toss, and with the help of a spectacular century of Mahela Jayawardene, the group reached a total of 274/6 in their allotted 50 overs. Apart from Jayawardane, who scored 103 runs, the other pillar of Sri Lankan batting Sangakkara also chipped in with 48 runs. The Indian pace spearhead Zaheer Khan took two wickets.
India needed to chase down 275 runs to re-write the history. However, the team had a shaky start and lost early wickets of Sachin Tendulkar and Virendra Sehwag. A young Virat Kohli came onto the crease and balanced the Indian side. Kohli brought the Indian team back to the track along with Gautam Gambhir, who scored a magnificent 97 runs in the game before getting out on a loose shot. Dhoni, who promoted him up the order, stitched 109 runs with Gambhir to take India to a comfortable spot. However, the winning six from Dhoni grabbed all the headlines, and this is what hurt Gambhir.
