Gautam Gambhir makes a comment on the Rohit-Virat choice as a Team India captain

Rohit Sharma led Mumbai Indians to victory in IPL 2020, defeating the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the final. Rohit won the IPL titles five times as a captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI)- 2013, 2015,2017,2019, and 2020.

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir feels that Rohit Sharma should lead the Indian Cricket Team in the limited-overs, after being so successful as a limited-overs captain. According to Gambhir, the Indian Team will suffer a huge loss if they don’t provide Rohit Sharma with an opportunity to prove his captaincy mettle.

“If Rohit Sharma doesn’t become India’s captain, it’s their loss, not Rohit’s. Yes, a captain is only as good as his team and I completely agree with that, but what are the parameters to judge a captain on who is good and who isn’t? The parameters and benchmark should be the same. Rohit has led his team (MI) to five IPL titles.” Gambhir told ESPNcricinfo.

The current Indian Cricket Team captain, Virat Kohli is yet to win his maiden IPL title as the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma has been extremely successful in the IPL. So, Gautam Gambhir feels that Virat and Rohit has a difference in their captaincy, as Rohit has already proved himself as a captain.

Gautam Gambhir also feels that India can introduce the split captaincy, with Rohit Sharma taking over the limited-overs side and Virat Kohli continuing in the longest format. Gambhir said that Virat Kohli is not a bad captain, but Rohit Sharma has outshined him as a captain.

“They can also consider split-captaincy. No one is poor. Rohit has shown in white-ball cricket how big the difference is between his and Virat’s captaincy. One player had led his team to five titles, the other hasn’t won yet,” Gambhir said.

“I’m not saying this because Kohli is a poor captain. But he has received the same platform that Rohit has, so you have to judge both of them on the same parameters. Both have been captains in the IPL for the same length of time. I feel Rohit stands out as a leader.” he concluded.
