Henry Cejudo Career
Henry was inspired by his elder brother Angel Cejudo, an undefeated four-time AIA wrestling state champion with 150 victories and zero losses. His first and second years were won in Arizona before moving to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to become a US Olympic Training Center resident athlete.
As a junior and senior, he won the Colorado State championships (CHSAA) and was awarded the ASICS National High School Wrestler of the Year in 2006. He was named to USA Wrestling Magazine’s Dream Team of High School All-Americans the same year.
Cejudo won the Fargo National freestyle title in 2006. He began full-time training at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, soon after his victory. There, he trained for the Junior World Championships, where he won silver for the United States team after finishing fifth in 2005. Rather than competing in college, he chose to pursue an international career.
Following his announcement in 2010 that he would attempt a second Olympic bid, Cejudo made his comeback in 2011 Beat the Streets charity event, defeating Rasul Mashezov 2-0 and 4-3.
On October 28, 2011, Cejudo won the Sunkist Open in his first competition following his layoff, amassing four victories. He won a silver medal at the Henri Deglane Challenge on November 26, 2011, after losing in the finals against Ghenadie Tulbea.
Cejudo overcame Obe Blanc before losing to top-seed Nick Simmons in the 2012 US Olympic Team Trials, failing to make his second US Olympic Team. Following the Simmons match, Cejudo placed his shoes in the center of the mat, announcing his retirement from the sport.
Henry Cejudo Career MMA Career
Cejudo announced on his Twitter profile on January 30, 2013, that he would begin training for a career in MMA. Despite wrestling at 121 pounds during his wrestling career, Cejudo made his MMA debut at 135 pounds. On March 2, 2013, he made his MMA debut for the Arizona-based World Fighting Federation, defeating Michael Poe via TKO due to punches.
Cejudo went 6-0 the following year, winning three fights by TKO, one by submission and two by decision. Before signing with the UFC, Cejudo was regarded as the top bantamweight prospect in the MMA Prospects Report 2013.
Cejudo signed with the UFC on July 25, 2014. He is the company’s third Olympic gold medallist wrestler, following Mark Schultz and Kevin Jackson. Cejudo was scheduled to face Scott Jorgensen at UFC 177 on August 30, 2014. However, due to health issues on the day of the weigh-ins, Cejudo was forced to withdraw from the fight, which was later canceled. In light of this and his history of missing weight, UFC president Dana White said Cejudo needed to move up to bantamweight or leave the UFC.
On May 6, 2023, at UFC 288, Henry Cejudo fought Aljamain Sterling for the UFC Bantamweight Championship. He was defeated in a close bout by a split decision. 21 of 23 MMA media outlets scored for Sterling, while just two scored for Cejudo.
Cejudo was scheduled to fight Marlon Vera at UFC 292 on August 19, 2023. However, due to a shoulder injury, Cejudo withdrew in late June and was replaced by Pedro Munhoz.
