“I didn’t get a wicket-” RP Singh remembers the time when MS Dhoni fought for him

A captain’s role on a cricket field becomes immensely important. A decision made by the captain can prove to be the difference between winning and losing. India also has had many influential captains and arguably MS Dhoni tops the list. Indian domestic circuit produces many star players every year and hence the role of a captain becomes even more difficult. A single bad game or bad moment in a game can define a player’s career. Ms Dhoni has also played a major role in defining many careers and RP Singh is one of them.

The calm and composed nature of Ms Dhoni has helped him in conquering many battles on the playground. However, critics have questioned his decisions many times on a cricket field and several selections have been a major cause of criticism.

RP Singh recalls the time when MS Dhoni fought to bring him in the team:

RP Singh, the lanky swing bowler from Uttar Pradesh was out of favour from selectors. The lefty was out of form and was struggling to get a wicket. Hence, selectors wanted to bring Irfan Pathan in place of the pacer.

However, the latest report suggested that Ms Dhoni fought with the selectors to keep him in the side. RP Singh recalls that MS Dhoni even put his captaincy on the line and included RP Singh for the next two games.

“I don’t think I was affected by the leak. The England series we are talking about, I didn’t get a wicket in Indore. Obviously, people think they will get 2 or 3 more chances. But it was not meant to be. Some get five chances, some get ten chances the lucky ones,” RP Singh told Sports Tak.

RP Singh bloomed under the leadership of MS Dhoni and became a regular face in India’s limited over set-up.  He said “We [Dhoni and I] discussed where I could improve, what I can do to get better. I know MS Dhoni. Friendship is a different thing, but leading the country is different altogether. At that moment, I think he pushed the ones who he thought were better. I think he pushed people whom he thought would follow the plans better,”
