Gautam Gambhir comments on Dinesh Karthik’s decision to leave KKR captaincy midseason.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are going through a troublesome time in IPL 2020. They suffered six wickets in their last match against Chennai Super Kings in Dubai. Now they have a very slim chance of making it to the playoffs. They have been experimenting with their team throughout IPL 2020.

KKR also handed over captaincy duties to the World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan in the middle of the season. However, this move did not bring any good fortunes as KKR are now placed at the fifth position in the points table, after 6 wins in their 13 matches. KKR revealed in the midseason that Dinesh Karthik has stepped down from captaincy to focus more on his batting.

Former KKR captain Gautam Gambhir is not happy with this change in captaincy role. Giving an example of his own, Gambhir reckoned that once he was also struggling with his batting, However, he concentrated more on the captaincy rather than abandoning his responsibilities.

IPL 2020: Gautam Gambhir comments on Dinesh Karthik's decision to leave KKR captaincy midseason.

Speaking to cricket.com, Gambhir said, “It just shows the mindset. You left captaincy because you wanted to concentrate on batting, but then it hasn’t worked, so probably sometimes it’s good when you take up responsibilities. What I’ve realized when I was through a worse phase in 2014. I got three ducks in a row when we started the tournament. It was captaincy that helped me that I could get back into form,” the former Indian opener said.

“The reason why because when I was not batting, I was thinking about how to make the team win through my captaincy and the decision making. But when you’re not captaining, you’re thinking even more about your batting,” he further added.

However, KKR still has a small chance to qualify for the playoffs. But it will depend on how teams like Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad fare in their upcoming two matches. Moreover, KKR will have to win their last match against Rajasthan Royals with a big margin to boos up their net run rate in IPL 2020.
