IPL 2020: Ian Bishop opens up on Paul Reiffel not giving the wide in the CSK vs SRH game

IPL 2020: The on-field umpire Paul Reiffel was in the news for a controversial moment during the match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Tuesday, October 13 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. In the 19th over during SRH’s run chase, he stopped himself from signalling a wide, when the ball was probably out of the tramline.

The umpire was ready to signal the wide but pulled out at the last moment. The SRH captain, David Warner was displeased with this and expressed his frustration from the dugout. Adding to that, they lost the match by 20 runs. Meanwhile, former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop spoke about this matter. (IPL 2020)

One of the most popular commentators, Bishop said that Reiffel changed his mind after looking at MS Dhoni, who expressed his anguish.

“It was wide, it should have been called a wide. He [umpire Paul Reiffel] started calling a wide. He looked up, he saw Dhoni, and he changed his mind,” Bishop was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo.

SRH needed 25 runs to win from the last 11 balls. Shardul Thakur bowled a wide yorker, and Rashid Khan could not connect it, and then the controversy surrounding Reiffel, started.

However, according to rules, Reiffel’s decision was well within his rights. Section 2.12 of the IPL match playing condition says: “Umpire’s decision: An umpire may alter any decision provided that such alteration is made promptly. This apart, an umpire’s decision, once made, is final.”

The game went right down to the wire. CSK won the toss and decided to bat first. They score 167 runs batting first. Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu, both scored crucial 40’s which pushed the team to a decent total.

During the run chase, SRH failed to keep up with the required run rate. Kane Williamson scored a crucial half-century, but his innings could not guide SRH to a win. Shardul Thakur and Dwayne Bravo bowled brilliantly in the 19th and 20th over to win the match for CSK. (IPL 2020)
