It is the first greenfield airport and the third international airport in the country. It comes after the Ratmanalana International Airport and Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo.

It was officially opened in March 2013 by the President Mahindra Rajapaksa. He gave the order to construct this airport and that is why the name of this airport is on his name.
