Jack Aitken F1 Career
Aitken was one of four drivers confirmed to join Renault F1’s junior driver program in February 2016. Aitken sampled F1 machinery for the first time in September 2017 when he tested the Lotus E20 at Jerez. Aitken was named Renault’s third and reserve driver in February 2018.
During the teenage driver’s test that year, he tested the Renault R.S.18 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Another test occurred at Suzuka, where he once more drove the R.S.18. Aitken continued as a test driver for Renault in 2019 and participated in the 2019 Barcelona test for junior drivers. In February 2020, Aitken resigned from Renault.
Aitken joined the Williams Driver Academy for the 2020 season, joining Formula 2 competitors Dan Ticktum, Roy Nissany & W Series, and Extreme E driver Jamie Chadwick. Aitken was also named the reserve driver for Williams. He participated in the team’s first practice session (FP1) for the 2020 Styrian Grand Prix.
Aitken made his Formula One debut with Williams at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, replacing George Russell, who was promoted to Mercedes after Lewis Hamilton tested positive for coronavirus. Before the event, Aitken stated that he had been “ready since Melbourne” for such an opportunity.
He chose to participate with the number 89 on his car, referencing the number he used in karting. Within a tenth of a second of compatriot and regular driver Nicholas Latifi, he qualified for the race in 18th place. On lap 61 of 87, Aitken lost control at the final corner, colliding with a barrier and destroying his front wing.
He returned to the pits for a replacement and was later able to continue the race, ultimately finishing sixteenth. Later, he expressed mixed feelings about the race, saying, “I believe we were doing a great job until my little incident. I can only apologize to the team, but there were many positives to take away from the weekend.
Aitken performed media duties for Williams on Thursday before the next race in Abu Dhabi but ultimately did not drive the car, as Russell returned to the team before FP1 after Hamilton was cleared to return to Mercedes. Williams announced in March 2021 that Aitken would continue to serve as their reserve driver for the 2021 season.
He participated in FP1 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, replacing Russell. Aitken retained his position as Williams’ reserve driver for the 2022 season. He did not participate in any practice sessions that year, and it was announced at the start of 2023 that he would leave Williams to focus on his sportscar career.
