Jake Shields Biography: Jake Shields was born on January 9, 1979. Shields was raised in the Sierra Nevada, near Mountain Ranch, California. He was educated at home through junior high. He and his two elder siblings grew up on the rim of the Jesus Maria Canyon at the end of a dirt road. Their closest close friends were on a 45-minute trek down one side of the canyon and up the opposite side. Mountain bicycling, wild caving, snowboarding, clearing plants, bucking firewood, ascending mountains, exploring the high country, and wrestling were among their activities.
At age nine, Shields began amateur wrestling. Over 601 folkstyle, freestyle, and submission wrestling matches have been contested by him. Shields was a four-year varsity wrestler & state qualifier at Calaveras High School.
He placed second at the Amateur Athletic Union National Freestyle Championships and qualified for the U.S. / FILA Nationals and World Team Trials in the juvenile and collegiate men’s divisions. He is also a two-time junior college All-American wrestler from Cuesta College, finishing fourth in the California JC state tournament at 177 pounds (80 kg) in 1997 and third at 197 pounds (89 kg) the following year.

Shields is best known for his 15-fight winning string, in which he finished eight of his eleven opponents before losing to UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre in a five-round bout at UFC 129. Shields has won the Rumble on the Rock World Championship and the Shooto World Mixed Martial Arts Championship. He submitted Nick Thompson by guillotine choke in a bout for the Elite XC Welterweight Championship.
At Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields, he fought EliteXC’s last middleweight champion and a two-time ICON Sport middleweight champion at a catchweight of 183 pounds (83 kilograms). Shields was released from Strikeforce on June 30, 2010, during his contract renegotiation period. Jack Shields, the manager and father of Jake Shields, said his son was eager to fight against the likes of Anderson Silva and other elite UFC fighters. In July 2010, it was reported that Shields was close to securing a contract to compete in the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
