In 1946, Tolan won 45 midget car races and the Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association title. Tolan won 47 races in 1947 to reclaim his championship. In 1948, he had 27 feature wins. In 1956, 1957, and 1958, he competed in the Indianapolis 500. In 1958, he finished thirteenth.
