Jordan Henderson could leave Liverpool FC this Summer and Here’s Why

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson might leave this summer with interests emerging from Spanish Champions Atletico Madrid & Mauricio Pochettino’s Paris Saint German. The 31-year-old has two years left in his contract with the club. Henderson celebrated 10 years as a Liverpool player last month, but if reports of this week are to be believed, the Reds captain may not be around for very much longer.

According to The Athletic “no real progress” has been made between Liverpool and their skipper in regards to a contract extension.

Jordan Henderson renewed his contract back in 2018 which is set to expire in the next two years. He is now sixteen games away from 500 appearances for the club in all competitions, and is still considered to be an integral part of Klopp’s first XI. However, Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are said to have “bigger priorities to address in the squad,” with lucrative new deals planned for players including Alisson Becker, Virgil Van Dijk, Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Liverpool have now found themselves in a worse situation with the club captain & Klopp’s dressing room leader set to leave this summer. Jordan Henderson lifted four major trophies in a span of 13 month which includes the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup. Liverpool are currently focused on extending Allison Becker’s contract which is set to expire in the summer of 2024.

Liverpool’s Transfer Window & Their Approach Regarding Jordan Henderson situation

Losing both Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum in the same transfer window will be a huge blow to Liverpool

Gini Wijnaldum left the club for free this summer to join Paris Saint German. Fenway Sports Group are clear that they do not want the same thing to happen to Henderson. Jurgen Klopp desperately wanted to keep the Dutchman for as long as he could but it is clearly understood now that things do not go exactly as Jurgen wants. It should also not be forgotten that Steven Gerrard, one of the club’s most iconic players, was also allowed to leave on a free under FSG. Gerrard left for LA Galaxy in 2015. He was 34 at the time.

Liverpool will be keen to avoid a repeat of that situation with Henderson, who has grown into a talisman after Gerrad handed over the captains armband to Henderson in 2015. Jordan Henderson came at Anfield in 2011 from Sunderson at the age of 20. He has now spent over 10 years with the club. Henderson has over 484 appearances for the club in which he scored 36 goals and assisted 64 more.

Losing Wijnaldum & Jordan Henderson in the same window will be a huge blow to the Reds and a huge void will be left in the midfield. The Sporting Director of the club, Michael Edwards has a lot of work left to be done and Liverpool’s priority will be contract extension this summer.
