Ligue 1 cancels amid doubts on the Champion

The Coronavirus crisis has forced many sporting events to either postpone or cancel. The Tokyo Olympics 2020 being the biggest victim of the pandemic. Football also saw one victim in Euro 2020 which was delayed till 2021. However, the effect of the pandemic has increased double fold in the past month, and various significant leagues have started calling their seasons. Ligue 1 is the latest to join the ever-increasing nations to cancel their football leagues. Earlier in the week the Dutch league also cancelled the season and left Ajax without a title even though they were leading the points table.

The French Government cancels the Ligue 1:

The announcement was made by the Prime Minister of France who contradicted speculations that the football season could restart by June. The French Professional League had announced its plan to restart the league by June 17 after UEFA gave the deadline for finishing the pending matches of this season by August 2.

However, the orders from the Government has cancelled all the speculated plans from the football federation. French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe’s announced that no sporting event would be allowed to take place till September has come as a significant setback to the league. In a statement in a national assembly, he said, “The big sporting affairs cannot occur before September,” “The 2019-20 professional football season cannot return.

Jean-Paul Delgraissy, the president of the French Scientific society, has also agreed with the nation’s supreme. He said “The answer for the moment is no since all the places where there can be a significant public will not be open from May 11,”

He also added “We give ourselves a few weeks. We are watching what is happening.”

No Decision on Winner yet:

The French football committee is set to meet in May where they may decide on winners. As per reports, the committee is not willing to declare the season as null and void. This will leave Paris Saint Germain as the Champion for the third year in a row whereas the bottom three will be relegated even when they have a chance to save themselves.
