Luigi Musso Career
Before debuting on the Formula One circuit on January 17, 1954, piloting a Maserati, he competed in sports cars. In 1954, he won the non-championship Formula One Coppa Acerbo. Musso finished third in a Maserati in the 1955 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. After the 1955 Formula One season, he made the transition to Ferrari. He shared the 1956 Argentine Grand Prix victory with Juan Manuel Fangio, but his season was cut short by an accident in a Nürburgring sports car race.
On January 20, 1957, Musso won the City of Buenos Aires sports car race in a Ferrari 290 MM. He was the car’s third driver. Stirling Moss completed the race in a ‘lightly propelled’ Maserati 300S and placed second. Moss made a final effort for his team, but it was unsuccessful. Eugenio Castellotti’s second Ferrari 290 MM finished in third place. The Ferrari team earned eight points toward the 1957 World Sports Car Championship in this event.
He won the Grand Prix de la Marne in the same year. Although the Marne was not included in the Drivers’ Championship, Musso finished third in the aggregate standings for the season. He won the 1958 Targa Florio driving a Ferrari Testa Rossa with Olivier Gendebien. Later that year, he co-drove a modified 4-liter Formula1 Ferrari 412 MI with Phil Hill and Mike Hawthorn in the second Race of Two Worlds on the Monza banked oval. They finished third overall in a car replaced by oval-track-specific American vehicles.
Luigi Musso Cause of Death
Musso was killed during the 1958 French Grand Prix in Reims when his Ferrari went off the track on the 10th lap of the 50-lap race. Musso’s Ferrari ran wide at the tricky Gueux Curve while chasing the leader, fellow Ferrari driver Mike Hawthorn, and somersaulted. Musso died later that day after being transferred to the hospital with significant head injuries.
