Mauricio Rua Career

Rua began his professional career in vale tudo events in Brazil, earning three knockouts via strikes, including a victory over future Chute Boxe Academy teammate Evangelista Santos. Santos matched Rua on the feet until Rua took him to the ground and forced the referee to end the fight due to attacks from Mount.

Shogun then entered the Global Domination Tournament hosted by the International Fighting Championships (IFC). Rua defeated Erik Wanderlei in his first fight with strikes, and in his second, Renato Sobral submitted him with a guillotine in the third round, suffering his first career loss.

Mauricio Rua Biography

UFC: Shogun joined the UFC when the UFC acquired PRIDE, making his debut at UFC 76. Rua was expected to prevail when he faced Forrest Griffin, the winner of The Ultimate Fighter 1. Conversely, Rua struggled against Griffin, quickly ran out of energy, and ultimately lost the battle.

He gave up to a rear-naked choke in the last moments of the third round. After that, he underwent surgery for an earlier knee injury. After leaving Chute Boxe in January 2008, Rua and his brother Murilo established their camp in Curitiba called Universidade da Luta.

Rua ruptured his injured ligaments again when training months after his operation, necessitating a second knee operation. He had to withdraw from UFC 85 because of this. At UFC 93 in Dublin, he was allowed to fight Mark Coleman again. With 24 seconds left in the third round, Shogun TKO’d Coleman. The match resulted in co-Fight of the Night recognition and a bonus of $40,000.

Rua received criticism from fans despite winning the prize for his weak performance against Coleman, who was 44 at the time and hadn’t competed in more than two years. At UFC 97 in Montreal, Rua faced off against former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell. Due to strikes, Rua won by KO. Rua’s win propelled him back into the top 10 of the Light Heavyweight division rankings, and the UFC chose to make him the next in line for a championship opportunity.

Rua facedĀ Ovince Saint Preux in a rematch at UFC 274 on May 7, 2022. He was defeated by a split decision. He fought Ihor Potieria at UFC 283 on January 21, 2023. He was knocked out in the first round via a technical knockout, and Rua announced his retirement during the post-fight interview.
