Mika Hakkinen Biography: Mika Pauli Häkkinen, also known as “The Flying Finn,” is a former Finnish racing driver. He won the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship twice with McLaren, in 1998 and 1999.

Mika Hakkinen Biography: Mika Häkkinen was born in Vantaa, Finland, on September 28, 1968, to Aila, a secretary, and Harri, a shortwave radio operator and part-time cab driver. Nina is his sister’s name. Häkkinen grew up playing football and ice hockey. When he was five years old, his parents rented a go-kart for him to ride at a nearby track. Häkkinen became hooked and went on to compete in numerous Finnish kart championships. He won his first race at the Keimola Motor Stadium in 1975, and by the end of the decade, he had twice won the Keimola Club Championship. Häkkinen won the Swedish Lapland Cup in 1980 and the Finnish Karting Championship in 1981 in the 85cc class. He won the 100cc Formula Nordic title a few years after moving up the ranks; he won it again in 1985 and 1986.

Häkkinen married former television journalist Erja Honkanen in 1998. They divorced in 2008 after having a son and a daughter. Häkkinen and his Czech girlfriend, Markéta Remeová, also have a son and two kids.

Mika Hakkinen Career

In 1987, Hakkinen moved from karting to car racing. He won the Finnish, Swedish, and Nordic Formula Ford Championships in his first attempt. The following year, he entered the EFDA Formula GM Lotus Euroseries, where he won four races and finished second in the championship. He later won the Opel-Lotus EDFA Euroseries. Hakkinen moved up to the British Formula 3 Championship in 1989, where he finished seventh. The following season, he won the series.

Hakkinen debuted in Formula One with Team Lotus in 1991; he completed his debut season 16th in the Drivers’ Championship. In 1992, he remained with Lotus before joining McLaren in 1993. After four years of modest success with McLaren, Hakkinen won his first Formula One race, the European Grand Prix, in 1997. In the succeeding 1998 season, he won eight races and the World Drivers’ Championship at the season-ending Japanese Grand Prix. In addition, he received the Autosport International Racing Driver Award that same year. Hakkinen achieved five victories 1999 to win the Drivers’ Championship for the second consecutive year. He also received the Autosport International Racing Driver Award for a second time.

Hakkinen placed second at the European Grand Prix in 2000, sixth in Monaco, fourth in Canada, and first in France. After finishing second in Germany, he won in Hungary to overtake Michael Schumacher in the Drivers’ Championship points. Hakkinen finished the season in second place in Japan, ultimately handing Schumacher the Drivers’ Championship. After two more victories in 2001, Hakkinen announced he wanted to take a break from racing; he retired the following year.

After 2007, Hakkinen retired from top-level motorsports competition. He launched his driver management career at Aces Associate Group the following year. Hakkinen continued to compete, this time in sports cars, in the GT Asia and Intercontinental Le Mans Cups. In addition, he became a brand ambassador for Mercedes-Benz, UBS, Nokian Tyres, and the Scotch whisky label Johnnie Walker, where he led campaigns promoting safe drinking and driving.
