Oleg Taktarov MMA Career
Taktarov began his martial arts training at the age of 12 when he began judo and sambo. He began competing in such disciplines during his mandatory military duty, eventually becoming a hand-to-hand instructor for the KGB before retiring at the age of 22 to become a businessman. However, Taktarov claims that in 1989, he got drawn to a jacketed mixed martial arts event called Jujutsu Full Contact, which he won in dominant form in four of its initial editions. Around this time, he began training in jujutsu and became a four-time European champion.
Taktarov and a training partner fought in the White Dragon MMA event in Latvia in October 1993 but had to leave the country due to political issues. He would arrive in the United States to pursue a film acting career, albeit his lack of English proficiency would delay this.
Before successfully returning to the sport in 2007, Taktarov had not fought since 2001. In November 2007, Taktarov announced his plan to return to MMA with BodogFight in an online radio interview. Thirty-three seconds into the second round of his first match against John Marsh, he won by submission (kneebar). His last bout was against Mark Kerr, the heavyweight champion of UFC 14 and UFC 15, and he again won by kneebar.
Oleg Taktarov UFC Career
Taktarov’s initial goal when traveling to North America was to become an actor, but he decided to become a professional fighter to extend his visa. Taktarov contacted the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in 1994, suggesting training Royce Gracie in sambo leglocks to get in touch with Hollywood actors. He had been to UFC 2, an Ultimate Fighting Championship event. Although he was approved as a training partner after showing his skill against multiple instructors, he was ultimately rejected because he could not pay the fee.
Taktarov then contacted the UFC management to compete for the prize money; he was informed that he was familiar with this competition and had a chance to win. In April, he was eventually accepted into the UFC 5 tournament, and he then learned that the Gracie family was trying to keep him out of the UFC. A week before the tournament, Taktarov dislocated his knee, but he chose not to quit.
According to Taktarov, he ended his UFC career after Ultimate Ultimate because the management was more concentrated on Shamrock than any other fighter. On November 21, 2003, at UFC 45, the UFC conducted a fan poll to determine the most famous fighters in the organization’s history. The fans voted Oleg one of UFC’s ten most popular fighters.
