She was raised as a tomboy who enjoyed the outdoors; her hobbies included riding dirt motorcycles and fishing. She was often tormented by a gang of females in high school.

VanZant was looking for a dancing studio after moving with her family to Sparks, Nevada, when she came across UFC veteran Ken Shamrock’s club, where she began training in boxing and other martial arts. VanZant made her professional MMA debut on June 30, 2012, at UWF’s Tournament of Warriors finals against Jordan Nicole Gaza in Corpus Christi, Texas, which she won by split decision.

She defeated Amber Stautzenberger unanimously at Premier Fight Series 2 on September 22, 2012. VanZant faced off against Tecia Torres at Invicta FC 4: Esparza vs. Hyatt. The event occurred on January 5, 2013, in Kansas City’s Memorial Hall. VanZant was dominated on the feet most of the bout and was defeated by Torres through unanimous decision.

VanZant was one of eleven women contracted by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) for its newly established Strawweight division in December 2013. In addition, it was announced that she would be a cast member on The Ultimate Fighter, a reality television show, as part of a tournament to choose the inaugural strawweight champion. Due to the availability of alcohol in the home, the minimum age to compete is 21; however, VanZant was rejected from the reality show on March 31, 2014, because she was only 20 years old.

VanZant suffered a back injury, and the fight was rescheduled for UFC Fight Night: Edgar vs. Swanson. In her UFC debut, VanZant defeated Curran by TKO in the third round in a bout that was named Fight of the Night. VanZant fought Felice Herrig on April 18, 2015, at UFC on Fox: Machida vs. Rockhold in Newark, New Jersey. Following a close first round, VanZant dominated Herrig with her grappling for a unanimous decision victory.

After participating in Dancing with the Stars, VanZant fought Bec Rawlings at UFC on Fox: Maia vs. Condit on August 27, 2016. She knocked out her opponent in the second round with a high-head kick and various follow-up strikes. The victory gained VanZant her first reward for Performance of the Night.

VanZant was scheduled to face Amanda Ribas at UFC Fight Night 170 on March 14, 2020. However, VanZant had to leave the fight after fracturing her right arm for the third time (Vanzant). She said the injury was minor and would recover in 6–8 weeks. VanZant requested to reschedule the match for one month later, but Ribas chose to remain at the event, and Randa Markos stepped in as a replacement. The bout with Ribas was rescheduled and ultimately occurred at UFC 251 on July 12, 2020. In the first round, VanZant was defeated by submission.

VanZant was scheduled to face Charisa Sigala on August 20, 2022 at BKFC 27. However, the battle was moved to October 15, only to be canceled a week before the event.
