Pat Miletich MMA Career
Pet Miletich began MMA training at age 26. Before this, Miletich trained with Grand Master Nick Tarpein at Tarpein’s Dojo in Davenport, IA, where he learned much of what he knew about karate and was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the first time. With Miletich’s basis in wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu came quickly to him.
When Miletich combined BJJ with his solid foundation in boxing/karate, he realized the proper direction for his fight career: MMA. After learning the fundamentals of BJJ at Tarpein’s Dojo, Miletich decided to go into BJJ full-time. A Chicagoan friend put him in a Renzo Gracie seminar.
After one year of jiu-jitsu training, the same friends put him in the 1995 Battle of the Masters tournament in Chicago. Miletich continued to compete in fewer events with success. Before his loss to Matt Hume, he was undefeated in 15 bouts.
Pat Miletich UFC Career
Miletich fought in UFC 16 & won the first UFC Welterweight tournament three fights later. Miletich defeated Mikey Burnett as the first UFC Welterweight Champion at UFC 17.5 Ultimate Brazil. At UFC 31, he suffered his first UFC defeat as he was knocked out by Carlos Newton in his fifth title defense. According to Miletich, he had a rematch provision in his contract, but the organization ignored it because Miletich’s camp already had several high-ranked fighters in the welterweight class.
Miletich moved up to the Middleweight division following his bout with Carter. The encouragement of UFC management and his friend Matt Hughes’s defeat of Carlos Newton to win the UFC Welterweight Championship also helped. At UFC 36, Miletich returned to fight in his new weight class but was defeated by Matt Lindland. Miletich resolved to take a break from his professional fighting career to recover from multiple chronic injuries. Due to an injury, Miletich could not face off against Frank Trigg at WFA 3.
In September 2006, he returned to fight against Renzo Gracie in an IFL super fight and was submitted in the first round by a guillotine choke. Miletich spoke briefly after the match about worsening an old neck injury before his bout with Gracie. In December 2008, Miletich defeated Thomas Denny with a second-round knockout that aired on the HDNet network.
