Patrick Tambay Career

Tambay competed in Formula 5000 with the Carl Haas team early in his career. Tambay debuted in Formula One on a one-off basis with Surtees in 1977 after winning the Can-Am title with Haas. He drove in only one session at the 1977 French Grand Prix before spending the balance of the season with Theodore. The partnership was successful, and Tambay moved to McLaren to race full-time in Formula One for the 1978 and 1979 seasons. In 1980, he returned to Can-Am with Carl Haas’ Lola team, winning early in the season and his second Can-Am championship.

Patrick Tambay Biography

In 1981, he returned to Formula One, first for the Theodore team and later for Ligier. In 1982, Arrows team head Jackie Oliver gave him the drive to replace the injured Marc Surer in the season-opening South African Grand Prix. He arrived at the track, but when faced with the ongoing turmoil and the threat of a drivers’ strike, he quickly fled and did not participate in the race. After losing his close friend Gilles Villeneuve in 1982, he was given a spot with the Scuderia Ferrari. In his fourth race with Ferrari, he won his first Grand Prix at the German Grand Prix that year after Didier Pironi was hurt in qualifying.

He won his 2nd and final Grand Prix in 1983 at Imola, driving with Jacques Villeneuve’s #27 in front of the Tifosi after Riccardo Patrese was destroyed at the race’s finish. In 1984, he was succeeded by Italian Michele Alboreto on the team. Tambay joined Renault and spent a year racing at the Haas Lola F1 team with his old boss Carl Haas. Tambay founded his own sports promotion company in Switzerland in 1987 but sold it in 1989 to return to racing. He raced a Jaguar in the World Sportscar Championship in 1989 and finished fourth in the Le Mans 24 Hours. He afterward began desert rally raiding, finishing in the top three in the Paris-Dakar twice. He competed in ice races and the Tour de Corse jet ski event.
