Randy Couture Biography: Randy Couture was born in Everett, Washington, in 1963 to parents Sharan and Edward Couture. He attended Alderwood Middle School in Lynwood as a child, where he began wrestling, and then Lynnwood High School, where he won the state wrestling title in his senior year.

Couture served in the United States Army from 1982 to 1988, rising to Sergeant in the 101st Airborne Division. In 1988, 1992, and 1996, he was an Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling team alternate. He was a three-time NCAA Division I All-American while wrestling at Oklahoma State University in the early 1990s.

MMA Heavyweight Career

Couture made his professional mixed martial arts debut in 1997 as part of a four-person heavyweight competition at UFC 13. He defeated Steven Graham by TKO in the tournament final. Later that year, as an underdog at UFC 15, Couture defeated Vitor Belfort to become the UFC Heavyweight Championship’s top challenger.

Next, at UFC Japan, Couture won the Heavyweight Championship by defeating Maurice Smith in a controversial decision. Couture joined the promotion company Fighting Network RINGS while still in Japan; following a loss against Mikhail Illoukhine, he took a vacation from MMA to focus on wrestling.

Couture returned to MMA towards the end of 2000 for the RINGS King of Kings Tournament, defeating UFC veteran Jeremy Horn unanimously. Couture also won his second UFC Heavyweight Championship in 2000, with a TKO victory against Kevin Randleman.

Couture won a tight decision at UFC 31 in 2001; in a rematch at UFC 34, he won easily by TKO. Couture went to the light heavyweight division after two heavyweight losses to larger opponents. In his debut, he competed for the UFC Interim Light Heavyweight Championship against top challenger Chuck Liddell. Despite being the underdog, Couture won by TKO and became the first UFC fighter to hold crowns in two distinct weight divisions.

Couture’s second fight was against reigning champion Tito Ortiz, who he defeated unanimously to become the undisputed Light Heavyweight Champion. He defended his championship against longtime opponent Vitor Belfort but lost due to injury when the game was called. Couture later became a two-time UFC Light Heavyweight Champion after winning all three rounds of a rematch.

Couture lost his belt in a rematch with Chuck Liddell in 2005. Couture fought Liddell one last time at UFC 57 in 2006, and after being knocked out in the second round, he declared his retirement from MMA. Couture went on to work as a TV analyst for UFC events after retiring.
