Evans, a wrestler from Niagara-Wheatland High School in Sanborn, New York, qualified for the state finals tournament of New York twice by winning his weight class in his region and receiving All-State recognition both times. At 145 pounds, he placed fourth in the state in 1997. At 171 pounds, he placed fourth in the state in 1998. In 1999, he placed fourth at the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championships in the 165-pound weight division. In 2000, when he competed at this tournament again, he won the 165-pound division.
Evans continued his wrestling career in NCAA Division I for Michigan State in the Big Ten Conference. In 2002, he placed fourth at the conference championships, losing the third-place match by decision to future UFC competitor Jacob Volkmann. In addition to Volkmann, future UFC competitors Gerald Harris and Josh Koscheck also competed in this 174-pound weight class this year.

Evans requested his release from the UFC on September 20, 2019, to pursue a comeback from retirement with another organization. Evans announced in December 2021 that he would compete for Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Eagle Fighting Championship promotion for the first time since 2018. On January 28, 2022, his return bout occurred at Eagle FC 44 against Gabriel Checco. Evans won by unanimous decision over Checco.
