Rory MacDonald MMA Career
At the age of 14, MacDonald began training with David Lea and his fight team at Toshido Fighting Arts Academy in Kelowna, British Columbia. He made his professional debut at the age of sixteen, defeating Terry Thiara via rear naked choke in the first round of an Extreme Fighting Challenge event.
He afterward improved to 2-0 by defeating Ken Tran in his KOTC debut. He won a bout in Rumble in the Cage and signed exclusively with King of the Cage. He won two fights after joining and was awarded a chance at the KOTC Canadian Lightweight title, which he won against Kajan Johnson.
MacDonald cracked the King of the Cage Lightweight Championship, which he won by knocking out Clay French in the second round. Following the bout, MacDonald came up to welterweight and defeated Elmer Waterhen via armbar in the first round.
Rory MacDonald UFC Career
The UFC contracted MacDonald after he compiled a 9–0 professional record. At UFC Fight Night 20, he made his professional debut against Mike Guymon. Guymon knocked down MacDonald with a right cross, but MacDonald recovered quickly, took Guymon to the ground, and won the fight with an armbar submission in the first round.
At UFC 115, MacDonald was defeated by TKO in the third round by Carlos Condit in a fight named Fight of the Night. MacDonald was competitive in the first two rounds due to his effective striking and three takedowns of Condit.
In the final round, Condit returned with a more aggressive approach and finished MacDonald with a combination of elbows and strikes. According to the judges ‘ scorecards, which were disclosed following the bout, MacDonald would have won by divided decision if he hadn’t been knocked out in the final seven seconds of the bout. Following this defeat, Macdonald moved to Montreal and joined Tristar Gym, home to outstanding fighters like former UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre.
