Former Barcelona player Thiago Alcantara ‘turned down last-gasp bid to return to Camp Nou’

Barcelona suffered a lot of economic instability throughout the summer transfer window. The club has not yet recovered from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Ronald Koeman’s appointment has had some considerable positive changes in the financial state of the club but the process delayed the plans for the transfer break. Barcelona failed to sign some of their major targets due to a shortage of funds and La Liga’s salary cap regulations.

Barcelona tried to bring back Thiago Alcantara

Koeman aimed to land Lyon’s Memphis Depay in order to replace Luis Suarez who left the club after 6 years to join rivals Atletico Madrid. Also, Eric Garci failed to make his much-anticipated return to his former club as Manchester City did not agree to the terms. Another player was linked to a return to Barcelona during the summer transfer window. Thiago Alcantara made it quite clear that he is looking for a new challenge as he was about to leave Bayern Munich after lifting the treble in the previous season.

Barca was also monitoring the situation of their former academy graduate with Ivan Rakitica and Arturo Vidal leaving an empty spot in the squad. The Guardian reportedly claims the Catalan club approached the Spaniard but they were unable to convince him to make his return possible. Instead, Thiago decided to join the Premier League Champions for 25 million pounds because Jurgen Klopp had better plans for him at the Merseyside outfit which prove to be more appealing.

Thiago has made 100 appearances for Barcelona during his stay between 2009 and 2013 winning La Liga, Champions League, and the Copa Del Rey. These are a distant memory now as the Spanish midfielder has made his debut for Liverpool against Chelsea in the Premier League. However, Thiago has been left out of the squad after testing positive for coronavirus.

There is a possibility that he may feature in the upcoming derby match against Everton. On the other hand, Barcelona is trying to bounce back from its lacklustre from the previous season. They sit 5th in the league table after scoring 7 points from 3 games. Koeman won his first two matches but slumped to a draw on the third as they met Sevilla at home. Barcelona does not have enough squad depth but still, the manager is adamant to rotate the squad and execute his formulated strategy accordingly.
