Venkatesh was born in a South Indian middle-class family to Rajasekaran Iyer (father) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India. He was an admirer of the cricket sport from a small age like every other Indian kid. Venkatesh started his training for the sport in a local cricket club in Indore and soon astonished everyone with his wicket-keeping and batting skills.
Being an erudite student, he did his schooling at St. Paul Higher Senior Secondary School and pursued B.Com with graduation in CA degree but later decided to solely train for the cricket sport while studying MBA at the Institute of Management Studies, DAVV Indore. He was always supported by his family to dedicatedly pursue a career in sports but was also advised to secure a graduate degree.
During his career’s early phase, he represented his school and local sports club in the district and state tournaments as a wicketkeeper-batsman and made his first national appearance representing Madhya Pradesh in the T20 format against Railways in the 2015 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

- Venkatesh played for his team as a wicketkeeper-batsman till representing at the U-19 level and later became an all-rounder for his team.
- In 2015, he made his appearance at his first List-A match representing his state, Madhya Pradesh in Vijay Hazare Trophy against Saurashtra.
- During the tournament, he scored 198 runs in 146 balls breaking the List-A record of highest runs scored eclipsing the score of 197 runs scored by David Warner of Australia. In this match, he appeared against Punjab.

Iyer is the fourth best run scorer in IPL 2023, after only Faf du Plessis, David Warner, Virat Kohli, and Jos Buttler, with 234 runs in 6 innings at an average of 39 and a strike rate of 168.34.
