Wanderlei Silva Biography: Wanderlei César da Silva was born in Curitiba, Brazil, on 3 July 1976. Silva began training at Chute Boxe Academy in his birthplace at the age of 13. His combative fighting style, founded in the street brawling and incorporating elements of kickboxing, landed him positions at Vale Tudo and the Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy. His instructors were renowned combatants Rudimar Fedrigo, Cristiano Marcello, and Rafael Cordeiro. At the end of his teenage years, Silva entered the Brazilian military.
Wanderlei Silva fought six matches in four different International Vale Tudo Championship events (IVC 2, IVC 6, IVC 9, IVC 10), winning five and losing one due to a cut stoppage in which Silva’s eye continued to bleed despite multiple medical checks throughout the fight.

Wanderlei Silva entered the UFC on October 16, 1998, at “UFC Brazil: Ultimate Brazil” in his worst career defeat.
