Yoel Romero Wrestling career
Romero began wrestling training in the 1990s, eventually representing Cuba at the senior level in the FILA Wrestling World Championships, rejected in non-Olympic years between 1997 and 2005. Romero became world champion at the 1999 World Wrestling Championships by knocking out the 1996 Olympic gold medalist Khadzhimurat Magomedov of Russia.
In 2002, he lost to become world champion again. Romero has assessed a point for inactivity with 20 seconds remaining after hitting a triple against Adam Saitiev to establish a 3–2 lead. In overtime, following an argument in which Romero emerged on top, it was determined that Saitiev had scored during the intermission.
Romero only missed out on a medal at the 1997 and 2003 world championships, when he placed fifth and sixth due to diseases. In December 2009, Romero made his professional mixed martial arts début after defecting to Germany in 2007. From 2008 to 2011, Romero was trained by Peter Althof’s “Martial Arts Gym Nürnberg”‘s Serge Kuftin (combat sambo & MMA instructor) and Zike Simic (kickboxing coach). Romero built up a record of 5–0 in multiple promotions in Germany and Poland over three years.
Romero signed with Strikeforce in July 2011 and made his promotional debut on September 10, 2011, against Rafael Cavalcante at Strikeforce 36. He was knocked out in the second round of the match. A cervical injury rendered him inactive until 2013.

After the UFC acquired Strikeforce, Romero made his promotional and middleweight debut on April 20, 2013, at UFC on Fox 7 against Clifford Starks. He knocked out his opponent with a flying knee in the first round. This victory earned him the award for Knockout of the Night.
Romero was scheduled to face Derek Brunson at UFC 164 on August 31, 2013. Brunson, however, received an injury and withdrew from the match. Brian Houston was briefly mentioned as a possible replacement but was not medically accepted to compete at the event, so the fight was canceled. Romero fought Ronny Markes in his second UFC fight on November 6, 2013, during UFC Fight Night 31. He won the fight via third-round knockout.
Romero was scheduled to face Uriah Hall at UFC on ESPN 15 on August 22, 2020. However, Romero dropped from the bout on August 11 for unknown reasons. The fight was ultimately canceled.
Romero was set to battle Vadim Nemkov for the Bellator Light Heavyweight World Championship at Bellator 290 on February 4, 2023. However, Nemkov was forced to retire for an unknown cause, and the fight was called off.
On June 16, 2023, Romero faced up against Vadim Nemkov for the Bellator Light Heavyweight World Championship at Bellator 297. He was defeated by a unanimous decision.
