Jijantes FC‘s Nil Sola said that Barcelona is reportedly interested in Oriol Romeu. The Catalan giants are looking to replace Sergio Busquets for the long haul during the next summer transfer window. And the 31-year-old midfielder for Girona has become an attractive option.
Catalan-born Oriol Romeu got his start in the sport with CF Ulldecona. He played for his local team for half a decade before moving on to Espanyol and eventually Barcelona. Despite having graduated from La Masia, the Spaniard was unable to get into Barcelona’s first-team system. And it was in England, where he eventually achieved fame.
The 31-year-old’s time at Chelsea was forgettable, but his move to Southampton propelled him to stardom. The veteran midfielder moved back to Spain this past summer to play for Girona. In 34 total appearances, he has contributed to the team with two goals. Romeu’s time with Barcelona might come to an end this year if the Catalan club decides not to re-sign him.
Sergio Busquets’ lengthy tenure at Barcelona will come to an end during the next summer transfer window. The loss of the seasoned midfielder will be particularly noticeable in the Barcelona midfield. Consequently, the Blaugrana should look for a replacement for Busquets. They are looking at a number of midfielders, including Martin Zubimendi.

To replace Sergio Busquets, Barcelona may consider re-signing 31-year-old Girona midfielder Oriol Romeu this summer
However, Real Sociedad has set their asking price for Zubimendi’s transfer at €60 million. Reports have surfaced recently suggesting that middlemen had offered N’Golo Kante to Barcelona. Romeu can help solve Barcelona’s midfield problems next season while not breaking the bank.
Nil Sola has said that Romeu’s future at Girona FC is uncertain. Staying in Catalonia might be a possibility for the 31-year-old ex-La Masia star if he decides to leave Girona. However, Frenkie de Jong is more likely to step into Busquets’s role as the starting midfielder.
It remains to be seen, though, whether the Spanish midfielder, now 31 years old, can complete a fantasy return to Barcelona this summer. For the time being, he is only one of several candidates to take over for Busquets when the veteran midfielder retires from the Spotify Camp Nou.
