Ivan Capelli Biography: Ivan Capelli was born on 24 May 1963 in Milan, Italy. Capelli began his career as a kart driver at age 15, and four years later, he moved on to the Italian Formula Three Championship. In 1983, he won the Italian Formula Three series with nine victories and was crowned champion. The following year, 1984, he transferred with the Coloni team to the European Formula 3 Championship, where he repeated as champion.
In 1985, he won one race in the European Formula 3000 Championship with a March-Cosworth from Genoa Racing. The same year, he made his Formula One debut driving a Tyrrell at the European Grand Prix (despite having never gone to Brands Hatch before) and finished fourth in Australia. In 1986, he was not selected for a full-time Formula One position. Instead, he competed in the 1986 Formula 3000 Championship, still with Genoa Racing, and the European Touring Car Championship in a BMW.

Ivan Capelli Career
Capelli was the first Italian to have a continuous drive with Ferrari since Michele Alboreto in 1988, following Gianni Morbidelli’s one-off race for the team the previous year. 1991 was challenging for the Scuderia, but expectations were high with a new car, the F92A. The new car was not competitive, and before the start of the season, Capelli expressed his discontent.
As a driver who relished the family-like atmosphere of a team, he struggled to adapt to Ferrari’s bureaucratic structure in the early 1990s. His teammates lost trust in him as he lost motivation, and Jean Alesi gained the upper hand. Capelli was fired before the conclusion of the season. It was the last season when a Ferrari driver did not finish on the podium until Felipe Massa in 2011.
Those who had worked with him in March, most notably then-Jordan team manager Ian Phillips, continued to have faith in him despite this experience. Taking a Jordan seat in 1993 alongside young rookie Rubens Barrichello, who the team believed would succeed under the guidance of the more experienced driver, Capelli needed help to rediscover the spark that had once marked him as a future champion. After failing to qualify for the second race in Brazil, he was replaced by Thierry Boussen by mutual agreement. He never again competed in Formula One.
