Alex Albon Career
Albon began racing karts competitively in 2005 at the age of eight, competing locally & winning the Hoddesdon Championship. In 2006, Albon started racing in the cadet class, finishing first at the Kartmasters British Grand Prix and second in the 2006 and 2007 Super 1 National Honda Cadet Championship. In 2008 he noticed his promotion to the KF3 class, where he remained until 2010. Albon won the Kartmasters British Grand Prix, KF Winter Series, Super 1 National KF3 Championship, CIK-FIA World Cup, & CIK-FIA European Championship during this time. Albon advanced to KF1 in 2011, finishing second in the WSK Euro Series and the CIK-FIA World Championship.
Albon joined KTR in 2013 to compete in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 season alongside Yu Kanamaru & Ignazio D’Agosto, finishing 16th out of 36 drivers. During the 2013 season, Albon achieved one fastest performance and one pole position at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. His final point total for the 2013 season was 22. In 2014, Albon raced with Gregor Ramsay, Jules Gounon, and Callan O’Keefe and had a significantly more successful year. With 117 points, he finished third in the drivers’ championship after failing to win any of the 14 races. However, he did earn pole position at the Nürburgring and finished third in the tournament.
On November 26, 2018, it was announced that Albon had been dismissed from his Formula E contract with Nissan e.dams following rumors that he would join Formula One team Scuderia Toro Rosso. Albon’s relationship with Red Bull, which had ended seven years earlier, returned on the same day Toro Rosso announced Albon and Daniil Kvyat would be joining the team for 2019. He is the first Thai driver since Prince Bira in 1954 to compete in Formula One.
Red Bull Racing announced after the Hungarian Grand Prix that Albon would replace Pierre Gasly and partner Max Verstappen beginning with the Belgian Grand Prix, with Gasly returning to Toro Rosso. Red Bull stated regarding the mid-season change, “The team will use the next nine races to evaluate Alex’s performance to make an informed decision regarding who will drive alongside Max in 2020.”
Albon returned to Formula One with Williams in 2022, replacing George Russell and teaming up with former Formula 2 driver Nicholas Latifi. Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull, disclosed that Albon retained “a link to Red Bull” and that the team had the option to recall him in 2023.
Albon was retained by Williams on a multi-year deal for 2023, partnering with Logan Sargeant, who replaced Nicholas Latifi. Albon’s contract extension signified the end of his Red Bull affiliation, though he stated that he still kept “a very close relationship” with the team; the logo of Monsoon Valley, a wine brand established by Red Bull co-owner Chalerm Yoovidhya, appears on his race helmet. He qualified fifteenth at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix due to a damaged front wing that prevented him from setting a time in Q2.
He recovered in the race to finish tenth and earn a point. He was forced to withdraw from the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix due to a failed brake. He qualified eighth at the Australian Grand Prix & ran as high as 6th in the opening laps before crashing severely on lap six. At the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan, he qualified in the top ten and finished the sprint race in the top ten, but he did not earn any points after completing the primary race in 12th place.
