Gustafsson started dating his present girlfriend, Moa, in 2015. Ava, the couple’s daughter, was born in May 2017. Later that month, after Gustafsson defeated Teixeira in his hometown of Stockholm, Sweden, the couple were engaged inside the octagon. The couple had their second child, a boy, in September 2018.

Before beginning MMA training in 2006, Gustafsson began boxing training when he was around ten. At the age of 16, he won the national championship (junior division) in 2003. He quickly returned to boxing in 2008–2009, winning multiple amateur tournaments in Sweden and defeating the Swedish heavyweight boxing champion in an amateur bout. In 2010, he was scheduled to compete in the national championship event, which he was highly likely to win. However, his recently revived boxing career ended in September 2009 when he signed with the UFC.

On May 30, 2009, at Superior Challenge 3, Gustafsson fought European veteran Vladimir Shemarov in his final bout before joining the UFC. He won the fight via first-round knockout.

Gustafsson made his UFC debut on 14 November 2009, at UFC 105, against Jared Hamman. At 0:41 of the first round, Gustafsson knocked out Hamman with a straight right and won the fight via knockout.

Gustafsson’s next bout was against Phil Davis at UFC 112 on April 10, 2010. Gustafsson was knocked out in the fight by an anaconda choke. Before this, Joe Rogan praised Gustafsson’s excellent grappling and takedown defense. Davis forced Gustafsson to submit at 4:55 of the first round after a series of vicious elbows had weakened Gustafsson.

On April 6, 2013, at UFC on Fuel TV 9, Gustafsson was scheduled to face former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi, and a victory was said to guarantee him a chance at the title. On March 30, however, it was disclosed that Gustafsson had been injured during a sparring session. The Swedish MMA Federation announced on April 2 that he was ineligible to compete. Gustafsson was replaced by one of his primary training partners, UFC newcomer Ilir Latifi.[

On May 28, 2017, a rescheduled bout with Teixeira took place as the main event of UFC Fight Night 109. After controlling the fight for the first four rounds, Gustafsson knocked out his opponent early in the fifth. Their performances garnered both of them the award for Fight of the Night.

On June 1, 2019, Gustafsson fought Anthony Smith in the main event of UFC Fight Night 153. In the fourth round, a rear-naked strangle resulted in his defeat. In his post-fight interview, Gustafsson announced his retirement from mixed martial arts by removing his gloves, placing them on the octagon floor, and saying, “The show is over, guys.”

Gustafsson fought Nikita Krylov at UFC Fight Night 208 on July 23, 2022. He was knocked out early in the first round and lost the battle. Gustafsson was set to battle Ovince Saint Preux at UFC 282 on December 10, 2022. Gustafsson, however, withdrew for unclear reasons and was replaced by Philipe Lins.
