Amanda made her professional debut at Prime MMA Championship 2 in 2008. Unfortunately, she was defeated in the first round after being submitted through armbar by Ana Maria. Things quickly improved, with Nunes winning five straight bouts before joining Strikeforce. During this time, she became recognized for her knockout victories, often defeating opponents in the first few seconds of the bout, but she did lose an early match against Alexis Davis.

Nunes subsequently joined Invicta FC, battling competitors like Milana Dudieva and Sarah D’Alelio, earning a win and a defeat. Amanda debuted in the UFC in 2013 when she defeated Sheila Gaff at UFC 163. Germaine De Randamie, Shayna Baszler, Sarah McMann, and Valentina Shevchenko were defeated. She did, however, lose to Cat Zingano.

At UFC 200 in 2016, she was given a championship opportunity against Miesha Tate. In the first round, Nunes won the fight with a rear-naked choke, capturing the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship. She successfully defended her championship against Ronda Rousey in 2016, knocking her out in the first round with a TKO at 48 seconds. After several successful title defenses, she challenged Cris Cyborg for the Featherweight Championship. Cyborg was knocked out after 51 seconds by Nunes.

Additional championship defenses were planned, but they all appeared canceled for different reasons. She was supposed to face Julianna Pena in 2021. However, she had to withdraw because of Covid-19. Finally, she fought Pena, whom she defeated in a stunning upset, losing her bantamweight belt.

A trilogy match vs Julianna Pea was slated for UFC 289 on June 10, 2023. Pea suffered injured ribs during training camp and would be unable to compete, it was revealed on May 2, 2023. Irene Aldana agreed to stand in for Pea at the event. Nunes won by unanimous decision and declared her retirement from fighting in the post-fight interview.
