Andrei Arlovski BIography: Arlovski was born on 4 February 1979 in Babruisk, Byelorussian SSR, Soviet Union. When he was younger, he was frequently assaulted by attackers. In 1994, at the age of 14, he decided he had enough and began lifting weights to gain muscle and, he hoped, to help him cope with bullying. At the age of 16, Arlovski started to train in sports such as Sambo, Judo, and Kickboxing.
Arlovski combined his interest in a career in law enforcement with his expanding martial arts participation when he enrolled in the police academy in Minsk. He took the required police defense course in Sambo and soon became a highly competent Sambo opponent.
In 1999, Arlovski won both the European Youth and World Youth Sambo Championships. Arlovski became the first Master of Sports and then the International Master of Sports soon after that. He was awarded a silver medal at the Sambo World Cup & the World Sambo Championship.

Arlovski lives in Chicago with his wife, kid, and pet dog, Maximus. He is an Orthodox Christian. Arlovski used Maximus in a public service announcement against dog fighting, calling it crude and painful. Arlovski adopted the nickname The Pitbull because of the outstanding qualities of these dogs.

On April 9, 1999, at age 20, Arlovski began his professional mixed martial arts career against Viacheslav Datsik at the Mix Fight M-1 in St. Petersburg, Russia. In his debut, Arlovski would be knocked out by a powerful straight following a competitive stand-up bout. Arlovski returned to M-1 Global in 2000 at the European Championships and won the heavyweight championship with submission and knockout victories.
At UFC 28, Arlovski debuted in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, defeating Aaron Brink via submission. The future UFC Heavyweight Champion Ricco Rodriguez and heavyweight contender Pedro Rizzo defeated him at UFC 32 and UFC 36, respectively. Despite these early difficulties, Arlovski’s victories over future British Cage Rage Light heavyweight Champion Ian Freeman at UFC 40 and future IFL Light heavyweight Champion Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC 44 propelled him back into the UFC elite.
After leaving the UFC, Arlovski signed on with the newly formed MMA promotion Affliction and competed in their first event, Affliction: Banned, on July 19, 2008. In the final round, he fought and knocked out a top-ranked heavyweight fighter and former IFL heavyweight standout, Ben Rothwell, halting Rothwell’s 13-fight win streak and giving him the first defeat in over three years.
