According to reports, Norwich City midfielder Emiliano Buendia is on the verge of signing for Premier League club Aston Villa at a club record fee of £33m which may rise up to £40 with add-ons. This breaks Aston Villa’s previous club record signing of Ollie Watkins last year, which was worth £28m, which rose up to £32m with add ons.
Just a few days back, Arsenal were seeming to be the favourites to sign Emiliano Buendia, but Aston Villa snatched the player at the end. It must be noted that Arsenal had put a bid of £30m to Norwich City, which was rejected by the recently promoted club. It is now being said that Emiliano Buendia had been on Aston Villa’s wishlist for a very long time.
Norwich City’s performance in the Championship

Norwich City got re-promoted to the Premier League after winning the EFL Championship this year with flying colours. That won the league with a clear margin of 6 points over Watford, who finished second. Argentine midfielder Emiliano Buendia had been the player of the season in the Championship. His tremendous form is the reason why many Premier League biggies had the Argentine on their target list. However, it was Aston Villa who secured his signatures in the end. According to reporter John Percy, Emiliano Buendia had agreed to personal terms with the club earlier, and now the deal has been sealed.
How was Emiliano Buendia’s form this season

Emiliano Buendia’s stats in the Championship this season were simply astonishing. The argentinian played 39 matches, scored 15 goals and provided 16 assists. If he is able to continue his current form in the Premier League, Aston Villa will truly benefit with the addition of a playmaker of this calibre.
The 24 year old midfielder is comfortable in playing both as a left winger and a right winger. At Norwich City, he usually used to play as a right winger, but also operated centrally.
It will be upto Aston Villa’s head coach Dean Smith to decide, as to what role he wants to give to the Argentinian. The combination between Emiliano Buendia and Jack Grealish next season, will be one to watch out for.

Is Buendia worth the £40m price tag?

The £40m price point might seem to be a bit too excessive, but looking at the situation of the market, there are not many options out there that are as good as Emiliano Buendia. The argentinian is also tried and tested in the Premier League. Moreover, Buendia is just 24 right now, and even if the transfer fails and he fails to perform at Aston Villa, the club will still have the option to make some good revenue by selling him. The club, however, will want the Argentinian to perform so that his relationship with the club becomes a long-term one.
Although Aston Villa have not made the signing official yet, they are expected to do that soon, probably by tomorrow. The upcoming season of the Premier League is supposed to start in the month of August. With Aston Villa having entered the transfer market this soon, they could be looking for a top 5 finish this season.
