Penn began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 17 after being exposed to the discipline by his neighbor Tom Callos. Soon after, he relocated to San Jose, California, to train at the Ralph Gracie Academy.
There, he trained with his roommate and buddy, Dave Camarillo, and decided to pursue a career in martial arts. Penn began studying with Brazilian martial artist Ralph Gracie in 1997 and finally achieved his purple belt. He subsequently transferred to the Nova Unio academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he won silver and bronze medals in the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship.
He received his black belt from Andre Pederneiras in 2000. Only a few weeks later, he won gold in the black-belt class of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, making him the first non-Brazilian and American to accomplish so.
