Why Barcelona’s €25m deal for this richly talented 19-year-old starlet is a smart move

Despite lack of funds, Barcelona is finally able to go ahead with Ronald Koeman’s first proper signing. According to AS, Sergino Dest has arrived at Barcato pen down his contract and complete his switch from Ajax. Barcelona broke their bank in the economically weak season to sign the 19-year-old for about €25 million. New Signing Dest to be announced soon

Sergino Dest Barcelona

Dest made his name in his breakthrough season previous season for the Dutch side making 37 appearances in the Eredivisie. He ended up scoring two goals and provided six assists during the campaign for Ajax. Even though being born in the Netherlands, Dest chose to represent the United States. The full-back will be a direct replacement to Semedo’s empty spot. Sergi Roberto is an option but he is not originally a right-back. The Spaniard is generally a make-shift in the position as a substitute.

Hence, Sergino has the opportunity to make it to the first-team squad immediately upon his arrival. The 19-year-old has enough potential to show his capabilities as both the clubs, Ajax and Barcelona, share similar ideologies. Therefore, it will not be hard for the starlet to settle into the Catalunya outfit.

Ronald Koeman trying to rebuild the squad

Koeman expects to utilize Sergino with his versatility who can also play as a left-back if required. This is one of the main reasons Dest picked the Catalan club ahead of Bayern Munich who was also vying for the youngster’s signature. The Bavarians wanted to back up their defense too with their success across Europe winning the Champions League.

Ronald Koeman looks to complete the final jigsaw piece in the defense with Eric Garcia signing from Manchester. However, Pep Guardiola’s side does not agree with the sum Barca is offering. The Blaugrana is financially unstable and it is problematic to meet the €30 million valuations by the Premier League side. It is only possible if Barcelona pushes for more sales or enquire a swap deal.

Eric Garcia is a former La Masia graduate who will not turn down the chance to return to Camp Nou. With City turning down a  possible swap deal with Barcelona it seems the club has to wait for a year till the center-back runs out of his contract at the Manchester-based outfit.
