Former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores, who was recently fired by the team, is sueing NFL and three of its teams – Dolphins, Broncos and Giants on charges of alleged Racial discrimination in its coach hiring process.
The law firm that is representing Brian Flores released a statement in which the coach said, “God has gifted me with a special talent to coach the game of football, but the need for change is bigger than my personal goals.”
“In making the decision to file the class action complaint today, I understand that I may be risking coaching the game that I love and that has done so much for my family and me. My sincere hope is that by standing up against systemic racism in the NFL, others will join me to ensure that positive change is made for generations to come.”
The lawsuit in concern has been filed in Manhattan’s federal court and it seeks damages from the NFL and three teams that were mentioned earlier – Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos and New York Giants.
The lawsuit says, “In certain critical ways, the NFL is racially segregated and is managed much like a plantation.”
It adds, “Its 32 owners — none of whom are Black — profit substantially from the labor of NFL players, 70% of whom are Black. The owners watch the games from atop NFL stadiums in their luxury boxes, while their majority-Black workforce put their bodies on the line every Sunday, taking vicious hits and suffering debilitating injuries to their bodies and their brains while the NFL and its owners reap billions of dollars.”
Leaked chat between Brian Flores and Bill Belichick
But what exactly happened that led us to all this?
Well to be precise, New England Patriots GM Bill Belichick mistakenly texted Brian Flores to congratulate him on the Giants job instead of Brian Daboll who actually got it. Even more interesting is the fact that Brian Flores had reportedly not even interviewed for the role yet ! The leaked chats between Belichick and Flores reveals the entire scenario fully.
“Sorry — I f—ed this up. I double checked and misread the text. I think they are naming Brian Daboll. I’m sorry about that,” Belichick said in the text.
In his lawsuit, Brian Flores has made many demands for the NFL. Some of them include the following:-
• Black individuals must have a greater influence in hiring
• The impartiality of hiring or terminating General Managers, head coaches and coordinators must be increased
• The number of Black coordinators must be increased
• Hiring of Black GMs, head coaches and coordinators must be encouraged
• The salaries of GMs, head coaches and coordinators must be transparent.
