Cain is one of his parents’ three offspring. There are two siblings in his family: Efrain Jr. and Adela. Cain and his family were raised in Yuma, Arizona. He won the 5A Arizona Wrestling Championship twice during his senior year of high school. He also played linebacker in high school football.

After graduating high school, he wrestled for one season at Iowa Central Community College, winning the 2001-2002 NJCAA National Championship in the heavyweight division. Velasquez then traveled to Arizona State University.
He wrestled for the Sun Devils for three years, compiling an 86–17 record and placing fifth and fourth in the nation in 2005 and 2006, respectively.
