World Extreme Cagefighting merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship on October 28, 2010. As a result of the merger, all WEC fighters joined the UFC. On February 5, 2011, at UFC 126, Mendes made his UFC debut against returning veteran and judo black belt Michihiro Omigawa. The fight was decided unanimously in his favor.
Mendes fought UFC Featherweight Champion José Aldo on January 14, 2012, at UFC 142, where he experienced his first professional defeat at 4:59 of the first round via knockout. Mendes was scheduled to face Manvel Gamburyan at UFC 157 on February 23, 2013. However, Gamburyan withdrew from the match due to a wrist injury. Subsequently, Mendes was removed from the program due to the inability to find a qualified replacement on short notice. Mendes fought Nik Lentz on UFC on Fox 9 on December 14, 2013.
